12 MARCH 2021
Conversation, like the red wine, flowed throughout the afternoon. 17 attended and 38 apologies were received. (See list below). Make a note in your diary for our next lunch, scheduled for Friday 25th June 2021. I’ll email details about six weeks prior to the date. At the lunch, Hugh Poate has offered to talk about his book “Failures of Command”. This is to be launched by Joel Fitzgibbon MP and hosted by Karen Middleton in Canberra on 30th March. It was a privilege to have Jonathan Persse join us. After lunch he entertained us, regaling the story of TKSOB and poet, David Campbell.
Jonathan told us of his six years researching and writing David's biography, which was published last year. It relates, among other things, to the communications between David Campbell and his friends, revolving around his published poetry and short stories. David Campbell was an extremely good sportsman at school. He excelled in rowing, boxing, athletics and in rugby which was his most successful sport – he played in the 1st XV for four years. David then went to Cambridge and during this time represented England in rugby for two years.
If you’d like a place a book order, Jonathan has offered to obtain copies at the discounted rate he receives from the publishers – email me at [email protected] with your book order.
We also heard from Rod Hammett about the current projects of the Editorial Committee.

Head of the River 1967
Following Mac Gugeon’s query about our website reference to ‘Regatta shock – It’s King’s’ we have to agree that this is only meaningful to those of our era. The Editorial Committee is therefore in the process of producing an article on the 1967 Head of the River win after 47 years as well as a Short Documentary. Progress reports will follow in coming months.
